So, basically every game from here on out is a playoff game.

Do you think it likely that SD will lose any of their remaining games? They have a pretty easy schedule from here on out. If Cinci were playing for something, that might be a possibility, but it looks like they've mailed it in.

I heard this song and dance right before they played Oakland. Seriously. Not trying to be a dick just representing the situation as it is.

No one was counting on an Oakland win either.
The 49ers and Bengals games will be tests for SD. The Bengals haven't been bad at home, and SD is a subpar road team at best. Yeah, they are 2-11, but they have a run game, 2 good WRs and it will be cold as hell there in late December. San Diego is 7-6 for a reason.

The 49'ers are still playing for something, believe it or not. Who knows? As pissed as I am about yesterday, I remind myself of this:
If you had told me at the beginning of this season that with 3 games to go...2 of them at home...we control our playoff destiny to win the AFC West, well I would have taken that scenario every single time. Hopefully we approach the Rams like we did the Seahawks' game. |

The wildcard will be Alex Smith. If he plays like he did against Seattle it will be a good game.

Like the other poster said, the 49ers can still win that awful division so they have motivation. The 49ers also were a bad Nate Clements decision (where he fumbled the INT that would have sealed the game) from beating the Falcons in Atlanta.

Question,
Lets say we lose one more game, finishing 10-6. San Diego wins out finishing 10-6 winning the division based on Conf. Record. Indianapolis wins out finishing 10-6 winning their division and leaving the Jags at 10-6 or worse. Jets losing to @ Pitt @ Chi and Buff to finish out the season at 9-7. Would this be the only Scenario that the 10-6 Chiefs have to make the playoffs? |

To illustrate the complexity, your scenario does not guarantee a Chiefs playoff birth. Even throwing in a Miami loss to drop them out, leaves the Chiefs at only 67% chance of making the playoffs if the Jags finish tied with the Chiefs at 10-6. In the scenario you outlined, if the Ravens and Jacksonville both finished 10-6 that would end up with a 3-way tiebreaker, negating our head-to-head tiebreaker over Jacksonville, meaning that Jacksonville would go to the playoffs and the Chiefs would stay home. So if you add two conditions to your scenario, a Miami loss and that the AFC central runner-up finishes either 11-5 or better or 9-7, then we would go to the playoffs. |
