Why people are disappointed: Exhibit A - Talent Evaluation

Since there seems to be several myths, excuses and some flat-out lies about why some folks are pissed off about this team right now, I thought I'd put together a few threads explaining, as clearly as I can, where people are coming from.

One of the bigger excuses is the infamous, "Pioli inherited a shitty team."

Let me make this clear: I do not disagree.

However, that doesn't excuse the Executive of the Decade for the team being no better now than it was this time last year - and you could make an argument that it is worse.

And one of the reasons why this team still sucks is simple:

The Executive of the Decade missed BADLY on talent evaluation.



I just spent a few minutes researching the transactions Pioli has made since taking the job, and it's even worse than I originally thought.

Counting draft picks, trades and signings, Pioli is responsible for FORTY FIVE new players to this organization.

And of these 45, it's fair to say that only Succop and Chambers are clear upgrades to their predecessors.

Two. Out of forty-five.

That's a whopping 4% success rate.



I'm sorry, but blaming Herm here is ridiculous. The best players on this team are Herm's players.

Looking at the current roster - including the active roster, PS and IR - 54% of the players currently in this organization are Pioli's.

Exactly half of the current starting 22 are Pioli's.

And this team is ONE win better than a 2008 squad that featured Tyler ****ing Thigpen at QB, and employed Gunther Cunningham as the DC.

With the majority being Pioli's hand-picked players.



Let the excuses flow like fine wine.

It is far from ridiculous my friend. What good is it to draft a playmaking WR that his specialty is speed when we just traded for and signed to a long deal a qb that struggles mightily with the deep ball? If I was gonna take a WR last year, Crabtree would have been a much better fit. Just sayin...

If Tyson Jackson ends up being a elite (top three) 3-4 end, the pick is justified in my view. It was far from my preference for the pick, but its not a wasted pick like people make it out to be.

I cant believe I have spent this much time defending a GM that I dont personally like...

I really think we took a step backwards from last year. We had more young upcomming players with more heart than anything. We got rid of several of those young players and replaced them with older players that prob wont be back next year or two.

Even though the last two weeks the O line has looked better and our running game is better our QB isn't. Yes dropped balls great excuse for the QB but he misses the target more often than not. It doesn't matter how manny INTs he throws Hali is sticking with him. First quarter of a game why is it so damn hard to drive down the football field and score a TD? Same goes for the rest of the game last year we put up more points with Tyler Thigpen. And I don't like Tyler Thigpen but we made adjustments during the season to help him out.

We really don't have anything to hang our hats on this year from our new regime exept for our kicker. jmho

And that they thought perhaps Hali and Dorsey could have filled that role. And it pains me that they compare Dorsey to Seymour instead of Jackson.

Im saying dont put the cart before the horse. Understand how much sense that makes?

When you have a team already built, you can afford to spend on a luxury pick, quick twitch wr. But you dont take that Santonio Holmes that high till you have the Steelers type team...you dont take Percy Harvin till you have a complete team like the Vikings...

Plenty of wideouts gardner a high pick while rebuilding, wrs like Crabtree, Calvin, Fitz, ya know...big guys that are legitimate matchup threats against smaller defenders around the red zone and inside the 10...guys that can develop into great blockers because of their frames, not just a fraile guy that is lightening quick and can beat 1 on 1 matchups.

Maclin would be a nice finishing touch, but wouldnt impact games for us as much as Crabtree of Orakpo could have. IMHO of course...

The only problem I had with Maclin is he always seemed to get hurt at MU and he has been hurt a couple times already this year.

I don't think that limiting the offensive weapons to what the present QB is comfortable with or capable of is a very good long term plan for building a great football team.
