Chiefs' TE Tony Gonzalez says: Make me a Giant

Chiefs' TE Tony Gonzalez says: Make me a Giant

BY RALPH VACCHIANO
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER
Tuesday, October 14th 2008, 4:00 AM
CLEVELAND - Tony Gonzalez wants the Giants, but do the Giants want him?
That question will be answered by 4p.m. Tuesday , when the NFL's trading deadline arrives. Gonzalez, the future Hall of Fame tight end, has requested a trade from the Kansas City Chiefs. And not only has he asked to be traded to a contender, but he specifically mentioned the Giants.
So far, the Giants have only expressed a lukewarm interest, reportedly offering a sixth-round pick. According to various reports, the Chiefs are looking for either a second- or a third-rounder.
Giants GM Jerry Reese declined to confirm or deny those reports, saying only, "We investigate everything. You guys know that."
The Eagles, Bills, Packers and Buccaneers all have been mentioned as possible suitors.
BEATEN MAN: Aaron Ross knows he needs to forget about Monday night quickly. He also knows that won't be easy.
The Giants' second-year corner was on the receiving end of a flurry of knockout punches from Cleveland Browns receiver Braylon Edwards, who torched Ross for 154 yards and a touchdown on five catches in the Browns' 35-14 win. Ross let Edwards slip through his hands for a 49-yard catch in the first quarter, and later was turned around and burned on a 70-yard reception.
The final indignity came in the fourth quarter when Edwards caught an 11-yard touchdown pass after Ross fell the ground with cramps in his calf.
"He's a Pro Bowl player," Ross said. "But I feel like I've got to step it up a little better. Guys are putting their trust in me. I've got to play better next time."
LAME NIGHT: LB Antonio Pierce started Monday night despite not being able to practice all week because of an injured quad. But he immediately aggravated the injury and was pulled for the second series. He later returned, but appeared that the injury was still bothering him.
"I'm 100%," Pierce insisted after the game. "I'm alive. That's all that matters."
S James Butler suffered a biceps injury in the second quarter but later returned. His left arm was heavily wrapped after the game. LB Gerris Wilkinson suffered a knee strain.
KICKED ASIDE: K Lawrence Tynes is healthy and went through his pregame warmup routine again, but the Giants once again went with 44-year-old kicker John Carney. ... WR Sinorice Moss, one week after scoring two touchdowns, was inactive Monday night

The Giants are smart not to give up the ransom they got from the Saints on Gonzalez. You don't trade 2 draft picks on a 32 year old TE that you don't need - and that you may only be renting for the next year and a half.
Maybe not 2 draft picks but more than a 6th.

I seriously considered this this morning. The only thing holding me back, other than not knowing who I'd bale for, is my brand new #72 Dorsey jersey. Suicide is also an option.

When trading for a player in the NFL, you have to keep in mind that draft picks are paramount.

Gonzalez may be worth a 2nd and a 5th to the Chiefs, but to the Giants? Maybe a fifth.

Why?

Because the Giants won the Super Bowl last year. TE isn't a premium position. Additionally, Gonzalez has maybe two years left to play (he's already stated as much).

The Giants draft in 2007 produced seven starters and role players, many of those guys contributing to their Super Bowl run and win.

So with that being the case, the 2nd and 5th round picks are MUCH more valuable to the Giants as a franchise (with probably a minimum of 4 years of service from each of those players) than getting two years (maximum) out of Tony Gonzalez.

Tony kinda messed up by waiting too long to go public w/this. There's just not enough time to get anything done. I see Tampa as most likely place since they deal the fastest.

He asked Carl to explore trading him 3 weeks ago after the Atlanta game.

It will all be over with in about 3 1/2 hours.

TG and LJ will still be Chiefs.

Trades rarely happen in Oct. in the NFL. Almost never.

I wonder how hard they're really trying. They might just be going through the motions to placate Tony. The rest of this year is primarily about judging Brodie Croyle, and Tony's presence helps to give him a fighting chance.

Deal for Gonzalez in the works?
Posted: October 14th, 2008 | Adam Schefter | Tags: Kansas City Chiefs, Tony Gonzalez

Might be nothing, might be something.

But the Kansas City Chiefs have postponed their regular Tuesday news conference to 4 p.m. ET.

Now it could just be they are waiting whether to see if they can trade tight end Tony Gonzalez. Clearly, the team is fielding offers and asking in return for second- and fifth-round picks. It is the price that was paid for tight end Jeremy Shockey and defensive end Jason Taylor, and the Chiefs believe Gonzalez is worth as much as those recently traded stars.

So far, teams are balking. But in the remaining four-plus hours before the trade deadline, no one knows whether the Chiefs or potential trading partner will blink first.

If no one does, the Chiefs can do their news conference later — with Gonzalez still a member of the Chiefs.

I been thinkin' this the whole time. Carl ain't gonna trade Tony for beans and that's all other teams are gonna offer. He's gone through the motions so when Tony isn't traded he can say I tried but there just wasn't enough interest.

Here is CNNSi's update:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...t14/index.html

Signs of possible Giants-Chiefs trade
Sinorice Moss caught his first two career touchdowns against the Seahawks last Sunday. And Monday night, he rested. Moss, the Giants' third-year wide receiver, was inactive for the game against the Browns. Rookie Mario Manningham was dressed in Moss' place. It's the third time Moss has been a healthy scratch this year, so what's the big deal? Well, the trading deadline is Tuesday. So did the Giants have a trade worked out for Moss and did they want to make sure he didn't injure himself? Perhaps they had a trade worked out with the Chiefs for tight end Tony Gonzalez? If they did, general manager Jerry Reese wasn't talking. The Giants' interest in Gonzalez appears to be mild at best. It seems they'd be willing to take him at a bargain price (reports are they've offered a sixth-round pick while Kansas City is looking for a first-day pick) but won't make a big push for him. After all, they didn't trade one pass-catching tight end (Jeremy Shockey) only to add another one who isn't as good of a blocker. (Newark Star-Ledger)

Like I said in another thread, I hope TG doenst get traded and starts speaking up against Herm and his gay cronies... Tony G could be the savior of this franchise by causing enough voices and discontent in the lockerroom that Clark is forced to do something before the team just quits on the franchise...

We need TG now more than ever.. He could be a true icon in KC, the only guy strong enough to take down the satanic cult of Carl and Herm...
