Just had to let someone go. suckage!

Well, I just had to fire a gal that's been with us for about a year. she is a real sweetheart, but just didn't have the aptitude for the job. I hate that shit. Sometimes I wish I was a heartless bastard that didn't mind jacking up someones life. Carry on.

I had to let a lady go this week too. It really sucked. I liked her, and she was good at her job, but we're a non-profit that gets funding from various states and we're getting more IOU's than money of late. It's was purely a financial thing, but I really hated to see it happen. The economy in California seems to keep getting worse and being unemployed is not a desirable place to be in this state when you've got mouths to feed.

Long ago, when I first got into consulting, I had a coworker who was a pretty attractive woman. Not frilly attractive, but elegant attractive. We were starting up a project in a distant city and the client had a social gathering to let everyone get to know each other, and one subcontract member of our consulting team (whom we had hired over the phone) was an eye-scorcher. Gorgeous figure, gorgeous face, and she was really nice as well. We're talking spectacular in terms of appearance. Absolutely spectacular. Seriously. Spectacular. Melt-your-face-off-if-you-get-too-close hot. My coworker and I had a nice conversation with her (no threesome or anything, just a conversation) and we met a bunch of other people and had a generally pleasant evening.

When we were driving back to the hotel we were chatting about who we'd met, and my coworker said, "I hated that Maria woman." [Name changed to protect the innocent.]

I said, "What?"

"I hated her."

"Why do you hate her? She seemed really nice."

"She was all arrogant and snotty. She's not going to be good to work with." She then proceeded to rip apart this other woman. Ripped. Her. Apart.

Now, I had been in the conversation with the two of them. They had not talked at all when I wasn't standing there with them. That Maria woman was very nice. There was absolutely nothing arrogant or snotty about her, and in fact it was the opposite. By all rights she should have been posing in a bikini on a Tahitian beach for seven figures a year, and yet she seemed quite happy with the fact that she was meeting us at a consulting social.

I worked with that coworker for several years, and beginning with Maria I began recognizing the pattern that any time she met a woman who was more attractive than she was, she disliked the woman, and it was never for a legitimate reason. It was amazing and it was completely consistent, and my coworker never knew that she exhibited the pattern. There were only two attractive women that she didn't beat on, and I think that was only because they were other coworkers that I was friends with, so she didn't talk to me about them.

It was quite the eye-opener.
Dear Penthouse,
I never thought something like this would happen to me, but.....

If I was single and a hundred times more attractive, the possibilities were there. And my coworker would have been all competitive and stuff, which could have been leveraged easily.

I had to fire a girl who was a good friend once because she started thinking it was ok to sleep late on Saturdays and miss her shift. It sucked not only because she was a friend but she was talented as well.

Lesson... don't be good friends with employees. That was my first management position though and I knew her before I got promoted so.... lesson to employees who are friends with their boss... don't take advantage of that friendship.

That's tough for any new manager. I had a similar experience when I first went into management in a company that I'd been an employee in for a long time. A good portion of my friends suddenly became my employees. It gets easier with time, but it sucks at first. Unfortunately, friendships are never the same once you fire them.

Yeah being promoted to lead people I had previously been friends with has happened twice. It can be tough but as long as they have respect for your position it can work.

This girl I had to let go went on to become the GM of a colliegiate league baseball team and actually hired me to do public address announcing 2 years later so it was water under the bridge and she got it. Last I heard she's selling high dollar real estate in NYC so she's done just fine for herself.

My wife's company just laid off one of her good friends. It stinks because my wife got her the job and the girl left her existing job to come work for the company. The girl has since thrown a fit and won't respond to emails from the bosses about finishing out the work in this pay period and returning the company computer. It's going to get ugly, I'm afraid, and my wife will be in an awkward spot.

I do not understand not returning the company computer..

On good terms I would finish the work while working towards the end date.. But it seems it was not good terms, so I would not finish the work.. I would return all the company property and then go job hunting..

How long has she been there before she was laid off??

2 years. That's what I had my wife tell her as well. She's going to want this job on her resume, so it's important to leave on good terms. She td my wife, "I won't use these assholes as references." my response: good luck explaining that 2 year gap in your resume.

My best friend is a dental assistant. She's not happy with her current employer because he hardly lets her do anything. She is very interested in becoming a hygienist, but it's going to cost her more money she doesn't have.

Well I say the "too dumb..." because a lot of the dental assistants I know are assistants because the a) couldn't make it into a hygiene program or b) failed the program. Hence my generality.

I asked her when she called and asked me to p.a. announce though if she was just hoping to hire me so she could fire me. She laughed. It was all good.

What does a dental assistant do relative to a dental hygienist?

DA works with the dentist. Sucks out your mouth, rinses you, hands the dentist tools, mixes epoxy, etc. Hygienist actually cleans your teeth and is responsible for your regular oral hygiene.
