According to the report, the league sources say the NFL determined 11 of the 12 footballs used by the Patriots were under-inflated by two pounds per square inch each. Per NFL rules, footballs are required to be inflated between 12.5 and 13.5 PSI and weigh between 14 and 15 ounces.

Mangini regrets reporting on the Pats for this, believe it or not. Perhaps, this is why he is no longer trusted in coaching circles. Mangini doesn't think their SB wins are even tainted as he knows from working there what went into them. He said he was just trying to get his own advantage over the Pats when he reported them.

Again, manipulating the texture of the ball is not new, and is legal in the NFL.

Deflating is not.

It's really that simple.

The NFL, 10 years ago, basically said, "Hey we know QB's have a preference. Well let them break the ball in, use it during practice, and manipulate the texture, but that's as far as it goes. Anything beyond that is Illegal".

The Patriots went beyond that.

Best resolution is to let them manipulate the pressure as well, since they can already manipulate the texture.

According to NFL rule makers, it does. You can argue with them, not me.

Hence the reason it's Illegal, despite the fact that they loosened up on other restrictions concerning the ball.

This is all via a Bill Polian interview, who was part of the committee that enacted these rules.

I hate agreeing with Dane. But for once hes right. Not only is there no evidence that the Pats did anything wrong, its such a non-issue in the outcome of the game its funny to see how many people are freaking.

If it wasnt the Pats it wouldnt have even made local news.
