Ever Sell an Engagement Ring?

You could spend weeks reading on the corruption of the diamond industry, but the bottom line is that diamond rings lose tons of value after they walk out the jewelry store. Pawn shops and "We Buy Gold and Gems" places won't pay more than the melt value for the metal and pennies on the dollar for the diamonds.

My girlfriend has two rings from a dirtbag ex that she's asked me to get rid of for her. One originally sold for $8500 and one for $1000. Any idea how I can get the most for these two rings?

My ring doesn't fit anymore (it was like a $200 tungsten ring), and there is less than no chance I'd wear it in my profession, but she told me years ago that if I get a new one the right size I need to get it blessed. So all this stuff means different stuff to her than me.

I think I need to go get a groove ring or whatever other silicone ring to not be a ****ing heathen and I actually do love my wife.
Bet it shows without the ring. Don't lose a finger.

Having to get it blessed adds a level of complexity I suppose. My own wedding ring cost like $125, but I wear a $10 ring daily because 1) it's a little more comfortable and 2) though the cost of the wedding ring is negligible, it does have some sentimental value, so if I lose one, I'd rather not lose that one.

The silicone ones are OK. Probably the best option if you're trying not to get your finger ripped off, but I don't like how they stick to your fingers a bit. Still, they cost like $10 for a five-pack if you want to try some on and see how you like it.

This thread is crazy.

In 2001, I bought my wife a 10k engagement ring. It's nice, she loves it, and I'm with all of you who are like WTF. What's crazy to me is that all the women who I work with or hang out with all have giant ****ing rings. When I bought the thing I really thought I had no choice in the matter, it is what it is.

I lost my platinum wedding band like 10 years ago. I was always taking it off. Must have left it somewhere.

And therein lies the challenge.

Buying a big engagement ring is not about showing your love. It's about being sure that your future wife doesn't lose status in her social circle, which I guess is a sign of love but not in the way that the commercials depict.

When my wife and I got engaged we were in economic decline. We were both losing our jobs and going back to grad school to retool, so her ring was nice but not extravagant at all. She wore it for 15 years or so, and then at that point we were doing pretty well and she was hanging out professionally with trust fund women, so I upgraded her to something more flashy one Christmas. Plus, I think jewelry perhaps has different meanings for many women than it does for men.

I like looking at jewelry from an artistic standpoint. I think gemstones are really overpriced, but then again my wife probably thinks that Chiefs tickets are overpriced.

You are both correct.

But not sure there's a point to all the hard work if we don't have the things we want.

It's ridiculous how much society has bought into the diamond industry's hype. They're goddamn sparkly rocks.

I was 22 when I bought mine; still in college. Knocked off some HS savings and my motorcycle money account to pay for it. Platinum setting with some baguette cut diamonds on the band and a 1.15 carat round in the center. It's a damn nice diamond; SI but with an inclusion I could hide under the prong - Ideal cut w/ F color. I really did some pretty damn nice work getting that whole thing bought/built for about $4k. And for about 10 years she had the 'best' ring of anyone she knew.

Now people are sporting 2+ carat rings and she kinda hints here and there. Jesus woman - what the hell do you need that kind of rock for?

EDIT: Holy shit!! That rock she wants is gonna cost about $20K! Pft - GFTO here with that. They say you can't put a price on good pussy but man I'm willing to say it ain't worth THAT.

- Buy a $1000 ring that won't be the envy of all your friends, but still does its job as a ring and expresses love and commitment and junk.
- Put $7500 in an account that will make a measly 5% over 40 years.
- Retire 2+ years early and buy a ring that will make your Bridge group jealous.

What I'm learning in this thread is that I lucked out by marrying someone who grew up poor and thinks that expensive jewelry is a waste of money.

Yeah making people jealous is super high on my list of priorities now, I can only imagine that will gain as I get older and closer to dead.

Not to mention I expect you to just give off the aura that you would kill for me. The ring is unnecessary unless it unlocks your gun.

That's 100% true. I had a friend (not named Jared) that was in the business and he said DeBeers is sitting on millions of stones. I don't remember the exact percentage of the diamond market they controled, but it was in the 80-90% range. Since then, the mines in Canada and Australia have broken away and the prices have gone down.

I suppose it's worth noting that my wife thinks that big diamonds are kind of tacky, so her ring features an emerald instead. That obviously helps to control the costs signficantly.
