Nate Taylor: Chiefs targeting OT Ronnie Stanley in free agency

Quote:
When free agency begins, the Chiefs will target Ronnie Stanley, the nine-year veteran who is the best left tackle available on the market, according to sources. Stanley, who will turn 31 this month, started all 17 season games last season for the Baltimore Ravens. He earned a 70.7 overall grade from Pro Football Focus and allowed just three sacks.

What's the dropoff from Stanley to Robinson?

The Chiefs sign guys in the first wave of free agency all of the time. It would not at all be shocking for them to do it again with Stanley.

Yeah feels like it could be any minute that a deal gets announced.

I assumed the deal was pretty much done as soon as they tagged him.

Can’t believe they would’ve tagged him and traded Thuney if they weren’t close.

Like it or not, this team is going to pay whatever it takes to get LT answered in a resounding way.

I hear the concerns about the injury history — Duncan is right in that it really was only one really severe leg injury that took a long while to recover from but now it seems that’s behind him.

A guy like Ronnie Stanley staying healthy is our only realistic chance at securing an elite left tackle that Mahomes doesn’t remotely question behind his back. That’s worth some extra money.
Can we outbid New England?

The Chiefs didn't even have to trade him. I don't think you understand what getting played means.

Getting played in this context is being used unknowingly to get more money from somebody else. The Chiefs chose to let Tyreek seek a trade. They got value for him back that they were more than satisfied with. It was a mutual agreement. Are you reeruned?

They might be close enough for him to choose chasing SBs over going to the highest bidder. It wouldn't be the first time. I'd be less confident if he were a second contract guy, but he's made plenty of money.

I also think people are underestimating how desperate the Chiefs are to fix this once and for all after what happened in the SB.

Because it was reported that the 49ers won the bidding war at the time. They weren't going to let the Chiefs take away their LT after beating them in the SB. It's very simple.

Kind of silly, but Madden ratings usually tell the tale. Stanley is a 90, right on the fringe of elite with no real weak spots. Robinson is a 78, slightly above average. It’s two different tiers of players.

Either one of them takes this offense to another level, but Stanley makes the ceiling much higher.

Stanley gave up less sacks and pressures last season… but Lamar was his QB rather than Sam Darnold.

With Stanley you're set as long as he's healthy.

With Robinson you're probably drafting an OT to develop too. He's more of a band-aid, but an OBJ one, not a Donovan Smith one.
