In today's money 2 million would be around 26-27 million for that same artist and his cd.......

Now we can have 2 million people go out and download the hit song for .99$..............

Seems like a lot of revenue lost to me...

This is a very complex conversation but essentially what happens (or used to happen, before the massive onset of piracy and the changing of the way record labels and publishers do business) is as follows:

1. Band signs record deal. Generally one record with an option for two more. The third record is dependent on the sales of the second record.

2. Band receives a "Recording Fund". This fund is generally no less than $500,000 dollars. From this fund, the band and record label hire a producer who in turns hires an engineer(s) and pays for studio time (likely about $2,000 per day in a "real" studio).

3. Record is completed and the band makes a video, generally about $250,000.00.

4. Band hits the road. Record company pays approximately $30k per month as tour support for the band.

5. Record label spends an additional $100-200k on promotions (Radio & TV ads, giveaways, etc.).

By the time the band's first record is complete, the video is shot and their out promoting, the band is in the hole to the record company by anywhere from $500k-750k before they even sell ONE RECORD. Once the band begins (hopefully) to sell records, they must pay the record company back for all of these advances (it's called "recoupment") before they see any earnings.

If the band flops, the band owes nothing contractually and the label takes a financial hit ("write off"). If the band meets or exceeds their recoupable amount, they then share in the profits, anywhere from 14-21% of the retail pricing.

Bootlegging and "being heard" aren't the same. The only way to get on radio is by promoters, whether it be the record labels or "independent" promoters.

The internet is great and all, but last year alone only 2% of ALL albums released in the United States sold more than 5,000 copies.

Do the math.

Its sad to know that my watching 4 movies and downloading a couple of dozen of very random songs that weren't on Itunes or Napster, caused the whole industry to collapse...

Oh, **** you.

If you don't think that the actions of you and people like you aren't causing people to lose their jobs and that multimedia companies aren't losing money hand over fist, you're ****ing dumb.

And BTW, reerun, I haven't seen anyone in here tell you how to fly an airplane, but don't seem to have any problem telling people about THEIR business.

You're ****ing dumber than I could have possibly imagined.

At this point you cant even be rational anymore... You just keep yelling "justification for stealing"...

Clearly, nobody is saying that. We get it. You aren't stealing a lot. You're stealing a little bit. Do you really think that makes it OK? How much stealing is too much stealing?

Nobody cares about copying cassettes. For each blank cassette and CD, there's a royalty that's paid to record companies and publishers.

What's protected under law is the intellectual property contained in any media format, whether it's film or music.

The problems arose when with the mp3, people didn't just share with a few friends like a cassette or CD burn, but with anyone on the entire planet that had an internet connection.

Do not understand the implications?

I am so sorry for your parents. I would be ashamed beyond belief in any of my kids had this attitude about stealing from others. Or maybe your folks they think this is OK and raised you to belive that stealing is no big deal.

I'll just let it go but I am almost speechless that not only would you steal, but admit it openly and then act as if it's nothing. Good God, what if you were a crime victim and the perp flaunted this type of attitude in your face? Do you have no pride at all?

Wow...thanks again to Dane for expressing things so much better than I could. I'm just sort of shocked. This really does remind me of that Midnight Vulture dude coming on here and bragging about swiping a laptop.

I could understand you feeling that someone is being hypocritcal if they call you out while doing similar things. But, I don't. Of course you could call me a liar and continue with the justification.

Omaha makes a good point, you don't steal much.

The guy who shot and killed his wife in Olathe only killed a little compared to Adolph Hitler, but most would still call him a murderer.

It's not about the amount, it's the principle involved.

Integrity is about doing what is right even when nobody else knows it or will ever know it. And as we grow older integrity becomes more and more important. At least in my family it does. It is one of the few things in life that can't be purchased.

Sorry to come across like I did, but this is personal and while I can take abuse, I get angry when it's my kids getting it. I'm usually not riled up to this extent and am truly uncomfortable with it. But man, you and others who do this piracy stuff are having a big impact on my family - even if your part is small. It's a collective thing.

If you were the only one on Earth doing your small amount, then it probably wouldn't matter but with so many doing it and thinking it's OK, it is a big deal.

Sorry for the harshness, but this is my kid, his life, his money, his career. What if it were your child that someone was messing with? Would that not concern you?
