Like the pick Direckshun but there is an offensive player that was available that fills a bit of a need that I cannot believe you passed on, but after going receiver in back-to-back picks I understand getting back to defense.

Stealing.

03-26-2015, 01:16 PM
Hm. Will be interesting to see who you're talking about.

I feel like I've done everything I can to boost up the weakest spots on this team, OL and WR. After that, I really wanted to pad some depth in the defense's back seven.

Sadly, I wasn't able to do that this time, but the upside is I got an excellent player.

Figured that was going to happen.

If you get a chance to watch some Hardison tape (and the Internet, for some unknown reason, has almost zero of it), take the opportunity. He's a blast to watch, though he is a boom/bust prospect.

With the 101st selection, the New England Patriots select Tyler Sambrailo, OT, Colorado State

The Patriots are thin on the offensive line and lack a left guard, a spot Sambrailo can man in year one. With Nate Solder a free agent in 2016, the Patriots might be able to groom Sambrailo to slide over and take his spot. Sambrailo follows a line of solid technique types with good athleticism the Patriots seem to covet, but must improve his functional strength going forward.

Close. I was going to take him at 97 and let McBride slide to 101 but I screwed up in my copy/paste endeavor and had to hope he slid 4 more picks. Awfully solid value at the top of round 4, that's for certain. BTW, you nailed that player I was talking about ;)

Not bad value. I don't know what to make of Anderson, really.

The guy looks like he should be a stiff, Mike DeVito-esque immovable monster. But he plays instead like a super-quick undertackle.

He'll need significant strength work and technique work, but with the right coaching and a ton of patience (I mean a LOT of patience), I think he has an outside chance at Pro Bowl upside.

Ugh. So much muck at this part of the draft. There are no sexy picks, and all the immediate needs of the Vikings (a fuck ton of LBs) just aren't worth it.

It is really quite the coincidence that Pest brought up my LeVeon Bell pick a couple years ago. Because here's another Spartan RB I'm about to draft.

GM SNR would have removed from the team that cancerous polyp on the anus of humanity known as Adrian Peterson awhile ago. Whether that was taking a mulligan in a trade or cutting outright. As it is now, AP might play, but the team needs to start planning for life after him anyway, with a two-headed monster backfield of Jerick McKinnon and this guy.

The Minnesota Vikings select Jeremy Langford, RB, Michigan State

I actually missed Smelter. I ****ing love Smelter.

The guy is a really good receiver, but I can't think of a single WR I've seen, in nearly the entire time I've been watching prospects like I have the last five years, get so intense in blocking.

Lots of WRs get guys to the ground when they blindside them, and most competent WRs can mostly disrupt WRs. But Smelter actually revels in driving into CBs and pancaking them. That's not virtually unheardof at the WR position, it's literally unheard of. I adore him for that reason alone.

He's got a ton of technique work to do on routes, but he's got a great radius, big hands, thick body, good (not great) athleticism, and boy, can he ****ing block.

At 0:37 is just a thing of fucking beauty. I love that more than any TD I've seen a WR catch this year. Just outstanding. And at 0:10, he's such a good blocker that the Hornets put him in line.

He's got a ton of work to do on his routes (I mean a *ton* of work), but he's physically gifted, and it's that physical nature that makes him so attractive to me. This is football, you win by being stronger and tougher than the other guy.

With the 116th pick, the Houston Texans select, Christian "Chris" Conley, WR, Georgia

The Texans cut Andre Johnson in the offseason, and while they have DeAndre Hopkins to take over as the number one, they don't have much else. They did well to sign Cecil Shorts III out of Jacksonville, but he may be at his best coming from the slot. Conley has great size and unreal athleticism to go with a pretty decent set of hands. Conley has shown he can be a game breaker, what he'll need to learn is how to become an NFL route runner. The tools are there for Conley to become a reliable #2.

This was such a tough decision between Doran Grant, who is an excellent nickel CB, Ben Koyack, my third favorite TE in this draft, and Jones.

I have Grant graded a hair higher, but Jones simply offers more value. He's a better, more athletic version of Brandon Spikes. No ILB in this draft hits harder, and he's adequate (not great) in coverage. Better yet, he's exemplary at defending the run, which is a dramatic weakness of ours. Plus, if the Chiefs passed on a starter-quality player at ILB here, their options become pathetic, essentially relying on DJ and Mauga to remain healthy for a full season (fat chance) which nothing being them.

Passing on a really good talent like Grant can be mitigated, however. He'd essentially be a better version of Chris Owens, who the Chiefs could still bring back if they had to, and the secondary is far from being the weakness that ILB currently is.

I love Koyack, too, but solid backup TEs can be found anywhere. They just aren't going to be as good as Koyack, which is a sacrifice worth making if it lands us a talent like Jones.

Crow sent me this PM that's worth addressing:

Why Jones over Ramik Wilson?

Just curiosity. I like Jones, but he's a 2 down thumper only at best. A Nico Johnson bust at worst.

I see more potential with Wilson, but there are concerns there as well.

I disagree he's a 2 down backer. He played a ton of coverage in MSU's 4-3 defense, and was perfectly adequate at it. His ability on coverage earned positive reviews at the East-West game, too.

I supported the Nico pick. It's a shame he didn't pan out, but that doesn't mean players with his skill set should be automatically discarded. Jones hits like a fucking truck, stops the run, and can cover. He's either benched Mauga or DJ by year's end.

You should bump your draft thread in the main forum with the new picks

I think you've managed need and value pretty well...we now have good young talent at wr and across the lb unit

Hypothetical: how different would people feel about these first 5 picks if we took Dupree in the first and a center with our supplemental 3rd?

Direckshun
03-28-2015, 06:46 AM
It depends entirely on how you'd view the Justin Houston situation.

If you think it's hopeless to get him inked long term, then landing Dupree is an ideal fallback option. Dupree needs some development but he's a god damned stud.

Obviously if you think inking Houston at J.J. Watt levels is possible/desirable, then it's a lot less sensible.

Not sure I might've taken the ILB from Georgia seems ferrocious.

Me and my brother were talking bout this the only thing this D is missing is that player with swagger. An ILB with swagger knows he is the best provides leadership and hits like a Mack truck to make any receiver think twice about a slant over the middle.

I'm hoping Perryman from the U is there for our day two picks he's the perfect example of this.

Direckshun

If you want pure attitude, add Mike Hull from Penn State. Dude isn't an All Pro or anything, but so long as he actually pans out (50/50 chance, there), he will run your locker room like a well oiled machine. He's a great leader on the field.

Wilson's a good ILB, but if you're talking about "ferocity," they don't get any more aggressive than Taiwan Jones. Jones put OL on their ass on the regular.

I very much disagree on Taiwan Jones' coverage ability being "adequate" in the NFL. It's pure garbage in my opinion. He'll be a liability there in the pros. I absolutely love him as a run down thumper. He's freakin outstanding in that regard. I see value there. I think he's great out of a base set. I don't like his chances covering anything in the NFL. I'll go back and watch some more film but I never saw it.

Billay fucked up and should have taken Koyack.

Upon further review, I shouldn't have taken Maxx in the first for Pittsburgh. I'll stand by the decision for the most part because I think it's the best value for how things fell to that point but the Steelers have more pressing needs than playmaking TE that needed to be addressed in the first round with a reach for a defensive guy which is what will ultiately happen in 5 weeks.

Was thinking about taking this guy with the Packers last pick, and I'm glad to see he's still available.

Had a very good 2013 season and kind of dropped off in 2014. For the price of a late 4th rounder, it's totally worth finding out if his productivity and fierce tenacity can be reclaimed, and also if he can be made to be a consistent and dependable guy as a passrusher along the DL.

I look at what guys like Vontaze Burfict, Tyrann Mathieu have done since entering the league. Last year I was spitting at my TV screen for the Chiefs to draft Aaron Lynch in the middle rounds, and I'm still pissed off that I couldn't get him for either of my teams last year in the CP Mock. He appears to be off to a promising start in the NFL in spite of what people said about his attitude being a poison that will prevent him from ever being successful in the pros. Man, what a tough decision. I bet I looked at 20 guys for this selection. Most of the players I was hoping would fall didn't. After reviewing all of these players, I only found a couple that I'd call "value" picks at this stage and I finally settled on who I believe is the best value.

After drafting McBride, I really felt better about the Patriots receivers, but they really need some depth too. Bell is a guy who can come in and go deep for you, he can work underneath, he can run block, so I like that.

Could reach on an ILB here. Lord knows it's the most looming need for this Vikings team, and I have yet to even think about drafting one.

I just really could take or leave any of these ILBs, especially when we're looking for them to play the Mike in a 4-3. When you get to this point, you're far better off messing around with the dudes on your roster than to reach just because the need wasn't addressed earlier. It's unlikely the player you reach on is going to fulfill a need if he's not a solid player or lacks real potential, anyway.

So looks like we keep punting the need at ILB into the next round.

I think every fan of every team in the NFL should have the experience of watching their team's GM trade for Matt Cassel. At least once.

It would cut down on the idiotic bullshit spewed by people like 49er fans. They would realize that it's NOT welcome to have douchebags come in and tell you that they acquired a "limited QB, but he's still an upgrade from what you've got, so you should be happy about that."

Washington has three DEs in their 3-4 scheme over 30 years old, and none of them are more than an average starter. After showing good strength and penetration ability at the Shrine Game, the 'Skins nab the oversized end to play the five-technique in their 3-4.

Eh - he's ok. To me he's ok value in the 6th but could go in the 7th or undrafted.

The Houston Texans select Javorius "Buck" Allen, RB, Southern California.

I really struggled to make this selection as I had 2 players equally rated at two critical positions for the Texans, but ultimately I felt like Allen is a best value pick at this point. If Arian Foster goes down, Houston loses the most important piece in their offense with no real depth to replace him. Allen is in a similar style with perhaps a bit more speed, which will help extend Foster's career and give the Texans the ability to keep a dynamic running threat on the field at all times.

Thanks. I actually am surprised he's on the board this late. He's a pretty damn good back. A one cut and go slasher that the NFL really loves. He has great size and good speed plush he can catch the ball.

Shit. I couldn't pass on Gaines for Atlanta cause I think he's gonna be damn good, but I was hoping Allen would make it to the colts pick.

Allen is somewhat similar to Frank Gore IMO. Gore could teach him the tricks of the trade.
