The Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Jameis Winston QB Florida State

In the least surprising pick of the draft the Bucs take Jameis Winston. When your teams biggest need and is rebuilding no better way to start then to try for a franchise quarterback. Winston is the best qb in this draft and is good enough to come in right away and make an impact immediately. Hopefully he can get around his off field issues.

The Tennessee Titans select Leonard Williams, DE/DT, USC

The Titans are a team without an identity but with the recent signings of CB Parrish Cox and OLB Brian Orakpo and the resigning of OLB Derrick Morgan the missing piece on the defense is a dominant force on the defensive line. The Monsters of the Midway were anything but in 2014 as their defense was wracked with injuries -namely in the secondary.

With the departure of Marc Trestman and the arrival of John Fox and Vic Fangio as the defensive chief, Chicago is primed to recalibrate their defense which bottomed out last season -and that has to start immediately across the line of scrimmage in a 3-4 alignment. The Bears must act in the top half of the '15 draft due to limited difference makers in the later rounds.

The Chicago Bears select Danny Shelton, nose tackle, the University of Washington.

The top talent left on the board narrows to 2 players - one on the defensive front and the other in the secondary. After investing $114 million in Ndamukong Suh it's tempting to pair a new version of Nick Fairley next to him. However, in the secondary the Dolphins can pair a physical S who can play in the box with Reshad Jones. Arguably a top-10 talent, and with a huge drop off in prospects after #1...

The Miami Dolphins select S Landon Collins, S, Alabama.

The Texans did well to re-sign Kareem Jackson in the offseason, but Jonathan Joseph goes into the final year of his contract in 2015. Joseph is getting a little older and will be 31 before 2016, plus I find it doubtful they'll put big money into two corners. Johnson comes in NFL ready as a cover corner and can lock down the slot immediately.

The Chiefs have several options here that cross their mind.

They have the next Jamaal Charles. They have a physically-handcrafted-by-the-gods WR on the board. They have not one but FIVE tackles, two of which have LT upside in case Eric Fisher falters. They have a utility offensive lineman who can play every position. They have a passrusher with ridiculous potential. And they have a gargantuan, powerful nose tackle.

Like virtually every NFL team that's ever drafted (no matter what they say), I don't draft BPA blindly, at least in the first round. If I did, we'd have Jamaal Charles and Melvin Gordon in the backfield in Kansas City.

Instead, I draft for the player that will help the Chiefs the most in the short- and long-term. And that cancels out the RB, the OLB, and the NT.

And that leaves the OL options and DGB. (I am not an Armstead fan, and this is too early for any of the remaining QBs, CBs, ILBs, or Maxx Williams.)

DGB will not be the Chiefs selection in this mock. I am not convinced he has what it takes to succeed in the NFL, and even though Kelvin Benjamin is the guy ringing in everybody's ears right now, DGB has far more in common with the dumpster fire that was Johnny Baldwin. It's possible that DGB gets drafted in the 1st round in the ACTUAL NFL draft, given his promise, but it's unlikely he becomes the 1,000 yard receiver his natural abilities suggest. It's far more likely he's going to be dead weight.

That does leave us with the OL options, all of which I grade roughly equally. I won't go through each of them, because you guys hate that for some reason. So I'll just review what the Chiefs need.

At LT, they have Eric Fisher. Fisher has every physical and mental tool to be an effective LT in the NFL. He's struggled greatly due to a slower-than-hoped learning curve and constant (minor) health issues, which he's now recovered from. He's also the 1st overall pick from 2013, so he's going to have an incredible long leash. I still believe in Eric Fisher, probably foolishly, and I don't see an immediate need to draft a potential LT to man his spot should he fail in 2015.

At RT, they have Derek Sherrod, Donald Stephenson, and Jeff Allen. None of these guys are top-half RT material, but all would provide roughly the quality Ryan Harris did last year. Which is to say, not great.

At guard, we now have four starting-caliber guards in Grubbs, Fanaika, Allen, and Fulton. They are not world beaters, but the position isn't the dumpster fire it was after Jeff Allen went down in 2015. I believe Grubbs and Fanaika will be our starters, with Fulton at swing guard.

Center is incredibly hard to project, because nobody knows what to make of Eric Kush, who has played fairly well in preseason and against the Chargers a year ago.

The Chiefs needs at OL are surefire starters at C and RT. So why not get a guy that can play both positions as well as any prospect the 2015 NFL Draft has to offer?

The Chiefs select OL Cameron Erving, from Florida State University.

Erving played ONE season at center at FSU, and already became the best the nation has to offer. Keeping him there to develop offers embarrassingly high upside.

Unless of course the staff falls in love with Kush, and Allen, Stephenson, and Sherrod continue bringing nothing to the table at RT. In which case, Erving was an excellent left tackle for the Seminoles -- and yes, he does offer LT versatility, as well as guard versatility. If you're trying to figure out the Rubik's Cube of the Chiefs offensive line, it helps to have a block that could be any color you want.

Erving has gotten extremely strong the past year, and is an exceptional athlete at pulling out into space. Erving's biggest issues are all technique-related (particularly his kickslide), making him a perfect fit under Andy Reid's tutelage. Dorsey is sure to love his 34"+ arms, which are unheard of at center. Florida State's program has an excellent track record with their centers, anyway -- the Chiefs just let an FSU center walk into free agency and get paid over $9m/year.

The Cowboys and the 49ers have shown the value of stocking your OL with first round picks who end up panning out. While that is not my preferred approach for building a roster, the upside is that it makes life easier on great RBs, and allows more routes to open up downfield in the passing game.

Whether you like it or not, and there is no doubt 80% of you will hate this pick, the Chiefs... have won themselves the draft. I'm just waiting for all of you to catch up.

The Browns are on the clock.

No, because if you can play LT you play LT.

He's legit. He was all-american consideration at LT last year. Was first team all-ACC at LT this year AND second-team all-ACC at C even though he only played like 4 or 5 games at the position this season. He's just that good. what made it remarkable and noteworthy is the potential financial sacrifice the guy made moving inside. The team was struggling at center after Stork left last year and they have a good freshman (soph? can't remember) behind Erving who is a LT. Here is a guy who has started so many games and is such a good student of the game that he stepped inside and was making the protection calls, driving out defensive tackles, wiping out linebackers... just because the team needed it to make their run at the title again. I like him a lot and could see him playing any spot. He's played the two toughest at a high level and shown himself to be a team guy. I think whoever ends up taking him whenever they end up taking him will not regret it five years down the road.

If we take a lineman in the 1st round, he's going to start. The problem the Chiefs have is that none of their options at RT are under contract next season, so it makes more sense to start the rookie at RT and plan to leave him there. I think that leads us more to Collins than Erving.

Now all that said, after seeing this in a mock draft, I think the Chiefs would be much better off drafting a playmaker at 18. Whether that's a WR, TE, DB, or ILB

The Franchise
03-17-2015, 02:39 PM

La'el Collins (OG/RT)

Chip Kelly wants to get younger on the line. That's why they cut Herremans and there's talk of Evan Mathis available for trade. Additionally, they'll likely let Jason Peters go after this season. Too much value to pass up a guy who can come in and start at OG immediately in 2015 and can bolster the line when older guys leave. DeMarco Murray, Ryan Matthews, Darren Sproles, and Sam Bradford will be happy with this pick.

The Steelers had defensive woes in 2014 and there are some intriguing talents on the board for Pittsburgh's first pick here on Thursday night. But the pressing need on defense was in the secondary- with Trae Waynes and Landon Collins off the board, the value just isn't there to take a defensive player in the middle of the '15 draft.

Offensively, Pittsburgh had some great moments in 2014 with Antonio Brown asserting his dominance as a pass catcher as well as the emergence of rookie out of Clemson in Martavis Bryant. The Steelers are set at running back and Big Ben was inked to a big extension, so it makes some sense to get the big man another big time receiving threat to afford Todd Haley flexibility in personnel groupings as well as to hedge the senior statesman on the offensive ends in Heath Miller.

With the 22nd pick in the 2015 Draft,
the Pittsburgh Steelers select, Maxx Williams, tight end, University of Minnesota.

The Browns are on the clock.

kevin white to atlanta? i know roddy whites getting old, and kevin whites a bad ass, but shit, they have more holes on their roster than a piece of swiss cheese. i mean heck, justin houston had the exact amount of sacks the falcons did. they have one of the best wr's in the nfl in julio jones. white is not a luxury they can afford.

no wide receiver for the browns with either pick? the best wr they have on their roster is brian hartline, and no one after that. their wr corps right now may be even worse than ours last season.

waynes to NO? they have a great secondary with browner, Lewis, Byrd, and Vaccaro. they just got rid of graham and stills. colstons old as dirt, and cooks is still a nobody. also their only solid pass rusher may end up behind bars.

max williams to pitt? are you kidding me? An offense that averaged 30+ppg, who lost no one. and probably the worst secondary in all of football. Worldis retired, and harrisons older than dirt. harrison might even be a fa i'm not sure. they need a pass rusher either way, or a cb. heck heath miller still looked good last year. they need secondary help more than we need to replace mike mcglynn.

kevin white to atlanta? i know roddy whites getting old, and kevin whites a bad ass, but shit, they have more holes on their roster than a piece of swiss cheese. i mean heck, justin houston had the exact amount of sacks the falcons did. they have one of the best wr's in the nfl in julio jones. white is not a luxury they can afford.

waynes to NO? they have a great secondary with browner, Lewis, Byrd, and Vaccaro. they just got rid of graham and stills. colstons old as dirt, and cooks is still a nobody. also their only solid pass rusher may end up behind bars.

Atlanta needs a pass rusher bad. It's been their Achilles's heel on defense since Abraham left.

Cooks was having a great rookie season before he broke a finger. He's hardly a nobody. :shake: I agree about NO''s secondary, though. Browner and Lewis are a very good tandem.

this has solidified for me the only player I'd be excited about the Chiefs getting in the first: DeVante Parker

and we have basically 0 chance of that

our second round pick is going to be more interesting than our first

Sadly this.

So, is Billay dead? Is anyone really away from the internet for 12 hours anymore?

I don't think I want to live in a world like that.

The Dallas Cowboys look to shore up their defensive line. While he screams 3-4 NT, he has the quickness and athletic ability to play in the 4-3. I think the Cowboys are signing Greg Hardy today, if not oh well, if they do it will be a nice rebuild of their d-line. Still they need some help.

Dallas Cowboys select Jordan Phillips, DT, Oklahoma.

My initial reaction was "Man... that's a good fit."

Then I remembered the whole Ray Rice thing.

Dorial in Baltimore would be scary for the rest of the AFC North.
