So how was the Saison.... I've had the Double, Triple, Quad ....
There is the Saison that is a staple in the Smokestack series, and there is a limited edition Smokestack release called Saison-Brett, which is the Saison brewed with a Belgian wild yeast known as Brettanomyces.

The regular Saison is infinitely drinkable. Sweet, slightly fruity, a generous hop character, and a fair amount of I-guess-you'd-call-it-spiciness on the front of the tongue. I thought it was very good.

Saison-Brett has a higher abv, so the alcohol kicks in with this warming effect. The Brettanomyces yeast is meant to do one thing -- provide a sour/funky character to the beer. The bottle I drank today wasn't as pronounced in the sour department as I would have expected, though the sourness did come through as the beer warmed. I have another bottle that I am cellaring since the beer is bottle-conditioned. I'll revisit it in about three months or so. Right now though, I prefer the standard Saison.

Good to know....my local doesn't have the Saison-Brett ..... so I might try regular Siason
The locally Siason produced at Augusta Microbrew is very good

Been nursing a Sam Adams Winter Classics 12-pack the past few days:

Boston Lager - I forgot how good this beer actually is because of its general omnipresence. It may actually be my favorite lager.

Cranberry Lambic - Drain pour. Nasty; not even a true lambic, either. What little cranberry flavor there is tastes more like V8.

Winter Lager - Decent enough bock with seasonal spices. Odd, chemically after-taste. I'll give away the second bottle of this.

Cream Stout - I remember this being better. Sort of a run-of-the-mill stout. Heavy coffee flavor, not much else. Don't know why I'd drink this when sixers of Sierra Nevada Stout are cheaper.

Old Fezziwig Ale - This is good. Cinnamon and orange zest work well with each other. Tasty and smooth; for being a winter warmer, the alcohol sure is hidden.

Holiday Porter - This is a darn good porter, I guess. But I'm a sucker for porters. Still, if this were available in six packs, I would never once buy it over Sierra Nevada Porter or my absolute go-to beer -- Boulevard Bully! Porter.

Best part about this 12 pack was the two Boston Lagers. I'm going to have to pick up a six pack of it sometime soon; it was damn refreshing for a change.

OK, so more info from my source with Boulevard:

In addition to launching the Single Wide IPA (which is a play off of their Smokestack series double IPA called Double Wide IPA), they will be releasing a new seasonal beer: a Maibock. Exact name is undetermined as of yet.

But here is the really exciting news: based off the success of the limited-release Smokestack series entry Saison + Brett, and the anticipation & demand behind the soon-to-hit-shelves limited-release Smokestack series entry Bourbon Barrel Quad (6th Glass that's been aged in bourbon barrels with cherries), Boulevard is set to release 4 new limited-release Smokestack series beers in 2009. The schedule is as follows:

Spring - a multi-grain Imperial Stout (!!!)
Summer - They termed it as a "Double Witbier"
Fall - Dopplebock
Winter - Barleywine (!!!)

Boulevard is stepping things up for 2009.

Went and had some pints of Single Wide IPA last night at O'Dowds @ the Plaza. Good-ass beer. Really tasty. It's no Bell's Two Hearted Ale or anything, but its a damn-solid IPA. Like most every Boulevard beer, it is balanced probably to a fault. Would have liked to had a little more hop dominance. Regardless, I'll be buying Single Wide IPA a lot once the bottles hit stores in March.

I had some Sailor Jerry and Coke (It's a 92 proof spiced rum, not as nice tasting as Captain, but does the job a little better), and some Hook and Ladder beers. Very, very tasty beers for anyone willing to spend about 30 on a case. They had a variety pack, and they're all very enjoyable. A good brown one and the others were some different flavors.

Also, didn't this used to say "drink of cholce tonight" or at least have some incorrectly capitalized letters? I always though that was funny...

But some general beer news:
Boulevard Irish Ale is already out in a lot of stores, and will be available pretty much everywhere by Friday, I'm sure.

Boulevard's next limited-release Smokestack Series beer, their multi-grain Imperial Stout (!) should be available within the next two weeks, too!!!

Also, Bell's Hop Slam (a double/imperial IPA) should hit stores within a week or two, as well. This is going to be a great next few weeks for beer lovers.

More Hop Slam, motherbitches!

I'm assuming Hopslam is some ridiculously hoppy brew. If you really wanna destroy your palate with hop bitterness, try Hopsicle. Not sure if it's available anywhere in KC unfortunately but it's out here in SoCal and as someone who loves hops if about fried my tastebuds entirely. Afterwards all other IPAs tasted like water.

Incidentally, I've been trying to stay off the sauce recently but if I do have a beer it will be one of my own making.

I've had Hopsickle before. It is indeed really, really bitter, even for imperial india pale ales. I found it a bit "one-note" (though that single note was a good one for a hophead such as myself) however.

HopSlam is ridiculously full of hop flavor, but its nowhere near as bitter as one would expect (or even desire, in some cases). It does have a delicious bevy of fruit and herbal flavors coming out of its hops, and just enough honeyed sweetness from the malts to smooth out the rough edges. (It isn't one of those really sweet East coast double IPAs, though, don't fret).

A manhattan is a whiskey martini, for all intents. I make my manhattan with Rye whiskey, as they were originally made. Rye is a lot easier to find nowdays, Old Overholt is available almost everywhere - it's cheap and very good. I keep Old Overholt, and Wild Turkey rye 101, there are a a lot more nowdays but those are the two I always keep in stock. Rittenhouse 100 and Russel's Reserve, Baby Sazerac are available here in KC. Old Overholt runs $12 or so, the others run up to the mid $20s.

Pour a jigger of rye, third to half a jigger or so of sweet vermouth and a few shakes of bitters in a cocktail shaker with one ice cube. I shake until the ice is mostly gone, then serve in a 'rocks' glass. Most bars usually put them in a cocktail glass, like a martini. Some folks do like the maraschino cherry, I skip them. Have one buddy who likes them so much that he keeps a jar of the cherries, drained of their juice and refilled with bourbon. I think they ruin my boyish figure.

I've gotten a few of my friends hooked on these. After they ran thru the Russell's Reserve I gave them, they had trouble finding more real rye at their liquor store, so they learned to like them made with canadian whiskey. Most Canadian contains some rye in their blend, less now than in the past.

You can make the same recipe with blended Scotch, then they're called a Rob Roy. They're all a pretty good drink on a chilly night. Or a hot night, come to think of it.

I've just been having trouble reaching a good and adequate intoxication level. For some reason, I have a very high tolerance despite me not weighing over 200 lbs. So, 151 it is. I've only had it in shots, not really used it in mixed drinks to predrink. We'll see if I go hoggin' or not!

I was thinking about putting some of those cans of ICEHOUSE in the fridge that someone put on my porch the other day, but decided I don't want to puke. I imagine I will get drunk at the bars one day and then decide it would be a good idea to drink those afterhours.

yes. If someone dropped 18 cans of beer on your porch you would be boggled as well.

Someone make this.

Since I get asked about this from various people from time to time, I figure I will share it with a handy guide.

What is a PGGB?

A Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is a drink I've concocted that has no taste of alcohol whatsoever. What started as a recipe I found via Google turned into a monstrous demon that can be made glass-by-glass, or en masse in gallon pitchers. I make them for every forum meet I go to, and as many will claim, it'll get you drunk. And fast.

But I don't like booze.

It's okay! I've even gotten people who can't drink anything to chug a glass. Ask Jack Frost's boyfriend. People who never drink who get drunk is the funniest shit in the world.

What the fuck is it then, get to the fucking point.

2 parts dark tequila
2 parts dark rum
1 part grenadine
top off with OJ

That's just a tequila sunrise with rum.

Ah, or so you think. Proportionally, when being made in a huge batch, it's about half liquor, half OJ. But if you're using a highball glass, replace "parts" with "shots" to get the most efficient version. But making them glass by glass is an annoying speedhump on the road to Drunksville. A common problem is the drunker you get, you add more liquor, which you still can barely taste, and then you vomit gooey syrupy mess all over your nice clean bathroom.

So what do I need to get me and my roommates annihilated?

1 gallon pitcher
1/2 gallon measurement container (they sell these at any grocery store)

The half gallon container is easier to use if it has milliliter measurements on the side. Half a gallon is about 1800 mL, so that means:

720 mL dark tequila
720 mL dark rum
360 mL grenadine

Mix all of these in the half gallon container, adding the grenadine last. You always want to add the grenadine last as it is very syrupy and has a tendency to stick to whatever container it's in, which could affect the mixture.

Pour into gallon pitcher, then fill the container up with 1800 mL of OJ to get any of the straggler drops of booze. Dump in Pitcher. If you want to stir it, go for it. Place pitcher in fridge and wait about an hour as the walls of the pitcher begin to corrode and decay into oblivion. If you like it colder add ice instead of letting it sit overnight, as overnight the booze begins to separate from the OJ and it just looks nastly.

Variants

From experimentation and watching puzzled bartenders make me a PG, I've found some things that are nifty ideas:

Slushies: Ice + blender + PG = brain freeze and literally tastes like water. Obviously if you have never used a blender for alcohol, it's best to make sure you have a glass blender so you don't fuck up your $20 Wal-Mart special.

Alternate juices: Once for the work Christmas party we had the bartender make me a bunch of these, and they gave boners to all involved, they were so good. When I asked about it during my third or fourth one, she needed to be reminded of what the mixers were. When I said it, she said, "we don't have OJ so I'm using pineapple juice instead."

I have yet to make a variant myself with pineapple juice as Joe is allergic to pineapples. But if you prefer sweeter drinks, mixing half and half OJ and PJ or just straight up PJ can work. I'd test drive it first though just to be sure.

Big Ol' Fucked Up Drum: At Beach House last year there was a 3 gallon iced tea pot. So I put in some ice, poured the entire contents of two half gallon bottles of liquor, a bottle of grenadine, and a gallon and some change of OJ. You use a little bit more rum/tequila this way, so you have to add more OJ to counteract it.

WARNINGS: READ THIS PLEASE

-THIS DRINK STAINS AND STAINS BAD WHEN IT DOES. DO NOT SPILL ON THINGS MADE OF CLOTH.

-The grenadine makes it thicker and grenadine is very sticky in general so don't spill it on hard surfaces either unless you clean it up immediately. It will become a bitch to un-gum it from your kitchen floor in the morning. This also means cleanup of the pitchers need to be done within a day or so.

-If you're making a batch, drink it all before morning. It'll separate and then it just gets nasty.

-Be careful how much you drink! As you cannot taste the alcohol you wind up getting more fucked up than you think you are. Drink this at a place where you know you won't be driving home as I'm surprised I haven't killed anyone yet. YET. It'll hit you like a fucking trainwreck. But, for what it's worth, it gets a lot of people drunk for $40 (approximately - $40 will net your two gallons worth).

-Don't use expensive/name brand shit. Some people say "oh I can't drink anything that bottom shelf" but bottom line, when this is all mixed it's going to be tasteless, so don't waste money on Cuervo or Bacardi (not that Bacardi is worth drinking period). I once actually did make a batch with Cuervo and Bacardi, and it honestly tasted like ass from being too rich. Tortilla tequila and Castillo dark rum work fine. I recommend Jacquin's or Ready Rabbit for the grenadine. Also get half gallon bottles as it's the most efficient way to make two batches.

-Don't use real OJ either. You can if you want, but at that point it makes the drink too thick. You may enjoy that though. Cheapo shit made from concentrate/watery OJ facsimiles thin the drink out (once again, grenadine is syrupy)

-Vomiting this stuff back up will be the most harrowing experience of your life.

-If you still feel like it is too strong, add more OJ to your glass.

Overview

This is not a newbie drink. Two Solo cups worth send someone who drinks every once and again packing. A non drinker will be passed out by the end of the first. A seasoned alcoholic like me takes about 4 or 5 to go down. Hence why saving this for meets/parties is a must. But - it's cheap, it tastes good, and it's reliable.

Drink irresponsibly.
