Category: Beer Tasting (http://mustlovebeer.com/Mark/blog/570/browse_blogs.php?c=3)

The Alaskan White Ale from Alaskan Brewing Company in Juneau, Alaska pours out a rich golden in color with a little cloud and a white head that readily dissipates. On the nose aromas of coriander, malt, citrus peel with an underlying sweetness. In the mouth you get honey like sweetness at first that is followed by orange and lime then the spice begins to show and intensifies through the finish. Moderate carbonation. Medium side of light bodied. Some lacing. Pretty clean mouthfeel with just a slight prickle from the carbonation. Good length finish with the spice prominent. There are a lot of wheat ales to choose from but the Alaskan White stands out above most others.
12 ounce bottle, 5.30% ABV

Torpedo is a wonderful beer, especially at the price. You do have to love bitterness, though. Its more bitter than a lot of double/imperial IPAs that I've had.

I thought it was okay. Wouldn't be the first one I buy normally, but I still liked it when I tried it a couple months ago. But yeah, lots of hops.

Speaking of Sierra Nevada, I tried one over the summer that had flavors of bananas and cloves. Weird combination. I think it is called Kellerweis. It was actually pretty good, though.

Their Kellerweiss is pretty fantastic. Its one of the very best American-made hefeweizens I've ever come across. You can't beat the price, either.

So... tonight I drank Boulevard's just-released 11th entry into the Smokestack Series: Harvest Dance Wheat Wine. My tasting notes are as follows --

750mL bottle served into a 2009 Boulevard Smokestack Series chalice

Pours a honeyed orange that reminds me of a Halls menthol-lyptus cough drop. You can see clearly the streams of bubbles from the nucleation but the beer isn't really transparent. The head, oh God the head, is enourmous. A gentle pour yielded foam that was initially larger than a full hand. It settles nicely into a two finger expanse that never quite dies from that point. The top is frothy and rock and generally consistent with sea foam. The lacing is understandably spectacular. Steven Pauwels and the Boulevard crew are masters at beer head, as evidenced by every single beer in the Smokestack Series. You will never see a beer of this style that looks better.

The massive quantities of wheat show up in the nose first off. Tangy, zippy smells balanced by the expected banana richness. What is entirely unexpected out of a wheatwine is the abundance of citrus aromas. In addition to the German hallartau hops that give this beer the leafy hop aromas that it has, Boulevard has chosen to use Sierra Nevada's own Citra hops. The mango-pineapple-grapefruit loveliness of those hops are an alluring and effective choice for this beer.

This is pretty fucking good. Its not simply a wheat bomb, there is plenty of malted barley flavor to go around. The malt background is so rich and is a strong background for the yeasty banana tastes and the hop attack. This beer is grounded in earthy, astringent hallaurtau which serves to highlight the bright, papaya, mango fruitsplosion of the citra hops. This is all so GOOD. The citra hops are so amazing in Harvest Dance! It actually reminds me of Ballast Point Sculpin in the aftertaste. The oak aging plays a key component here. There is a lightly smoky, meaty quality that actually accentuates the banana, amazing as that sounds. The oak barrels were specifically used previously to hold French chardonnay if I remember correctly. There is a light grape to the back end that feels brusk from the oaky smoke. I know that brusk isn't a word; I have invented it for the very purpose of describing this beer.

The mouthfeel is okay. There is a lot of carbonation, which makes it very easy for the beer to get foamy in the mouth the same way as Dr. Pepper does. There is a slight issue with the alcohol in this beer. Its tastes a little bit more boozy than the 9% that it is. Its never harsh, but if I have to stop and think about why something in the mouthfeel isn't working perfectly then it merits mention. As far as drinkability goes, I imagine that this is drinkable enough for the style. The bottle is disappearing quickly and the ABV is not unreasonable.

Boulevard have proven themselves time and again to be masters of wheat. They just know how to make it do great things. Harvest Dance Wheat Wine is no exception. Its insanely flavored yet very balanced. Easy to drink for the style but also very complex. This is fantastic. You really must obtain some, drink some and age some.

FYI everyone -- Boulevard's [Smokestack Series] Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale is out in stores now. It is a part of the regular Smokestack Series lineup, replacing the Saison. Tank 7 itself is a Saison, too, and a better (though entirely different) recipe.

Me neither. I'm way into beer and I really enjoy wine for 1.) their abilities to be very complex while somewhat light in alcohol and 2.) their abilities to pair with food and take the meal to a new, better place.

So Bell's HopSlam, perhaps the best beer commercially available in MO or KS, comes out on shelves tomorrow. Flying Saucer in P&L district in KCMO had a keg on-tap tonight. In addition, they had two firkins of HopSlam on cask which is a whole other ballgame in terms of mouthfeel, cask ale being unfiltered, unpasteurized and mostly uncarbonated (no CO2).

So I drank tonight:
1x Bell's HopSlam on cask
1x Bell's HopSlam on-tap (CO2)
and capped off those two 10% ABV beers with the 8.5%
1x New Belgium Fall Wild Ale

750mL bottle served into a 2009 Boulevard Smokestack Series chalice

Damn, this is pretty. I expect nothing less from a Smokestack Series beer; Boulevard brewmaster Steven Pauwels has mastered the art of perfect looking beer. Collaboration No. 1 is no different. It pours a very pale lemon shade of yellow. Though super-light in color -- light enough to see the carbonation bubbles rise in pretty pillars to the top of the glass -- there is just enough cloudiness to the body to lend the bear a hazy glow when held to direct light. The stark white head is two fingers or more at its peak with fairly sticky lacing. I don't know the exact detail of the old-world brewing methods that Pauwels and Rock used but these techniques sure delivered a gorgeous beer.

The aroma strikes first with a very drying sort of band-aid phenolic thing before lending to the airy, doughy pilsner malt. As the beer warms and opens up there are frankly Orval-like Beligan pale ale aromas coming out. Lots of apple skin and lemongrass and bittering hops. Its yeasty for sure but there is a restraint holding things back. Its pretty fruity for a pils but plenty good smelling.

The fruit phenols are imminently noticeable on the tongue. Apple skin and pear flesh and squeezed lemon brighten up the malt. The pilsner malt is clean and bready and a great backbone for the yeasty flavors and the leafy, astringent hops. Brewing spice -- clove, most likely -- swirls around all of the flavors as the beer warms. This is as much a Belgian Pale as it is an old-world Pils; whatever it is it is a clean, technical, well-executed brew.

I typically prefer my pilsners to be very light in mouthfeel but there are some stronger, more yeast-centric flavors in this Imperial strength pils. Thankfully the body has been thickened to accommodate the increased flavor profile. While medium-bodied, Collaboration No. 1 doesn't sacrifice in carbonation level. The beer is at all times lively and prickly with jets of bubbles. This carbonation helps keep this refreshing, a key quality of a good pilsner. That sense of refreshment works with the flavors to make this a very drinkable beer, especially with food. This would be delightful with a grilled burger or a simple summer salad.

When this beer was announced there was some trepidation at the fact that it would be an imperial pilsner. After all, this is a monumental event for craft beer! This beer marks the first time that an American craft brewery has collaborated with the brewmaster of one of the seven Trappist breweries worldwide! Shouldn't such a huge collaboration -- one between the Brettonamyces loving brewers of Saison-Brett and Orval -- be something more daring, more innovative? Imperial Pilsner sounds boring but this beer, I assure you, is not. Pauwles and Jean-Marie Rock used long-extinct brewing methods to craft a beer that Rock has wanted for years to give to the world. This refreshing, delicious pilsner is worth buying and enjoying not only because it is a limited release, not only because it is an important collaboration, but because it is a flat-out very good beer. Don't miss out.

White Russian followed by Boulevard Pale Ale tonight....yours?

One of my FAVES! A great WR is damned good vodka fun. And the Boulevard follow-up MUST BE either an Irish Ale or a Bob's 47.
