I have drank almost an entire 2 liter bottle of A&W root beer tonight while watching the Cardinals game and surfing on the Planet.

Of course, yesterday I had 5 pints of Schlafly pale ale, a shot of Jager, 3 cans of Milwaukee's Best Light, a small cup of Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat draft, and a small cup of Shiner Bock draft.

It was my last day at my job, so we left work early to celebrate, then I had a softball game afterwards.

Nothing like starting a new job today with a hangover.

of various Brewing organisations retired to the bar at
the end of each day's conference.

Bruce, CEO of Fosters, shouted to the Barman:
"In 'Strylya, we make the best bladdy beer in the

Bob, CEO of Budweiser, calls out next:
"In the States, we brew the finest beers of the world,
and I make the King of them all, gimme a Bud."

Hans, CEO of Becks steps up next:
"In Germany ve invented das beer, verdamt. Give me ein
Becks, ya ist Der real King of beers, danke."

Paddy, CEO of Guinness, steps forward:
"Barman, would ya give me a doyet coke wid ice and
lemon. Tanks."

The others stare at him in stunned silence, amazement
written all over their faces. Eventually Bruce asks:
"Are you not going to have a Guinness, Pat?"

Paddy replies: "Well, if you fookin' pansies aren't

Manhattan

2 ounces rye whiskey
1/2 ounce sweet vermouth
1 dash of Angostura bitters (optional)
Shake with cracked ice; strain into chilled cocktail glass and serve. Variation: Use bourbon instead of rye.

RH, are you still in Houston? There was a cigar-bar over on Kirby around Westheimer that had a heckuva good whiskey selection. Step in there and tell the barkeep you'd like a proper manhattan, with Van Winkle rye if they've got it.

The distillers add Rye grain to most bourbon mash in order to bring up more of a spicy flavor that balances the corns sweetness. Only a handful of real American rye whiskey's are available these days. Old Overholt is your best $10-12 bet, WT Rye is ~ $16 or so, Van Winkle rye is $30 or so, jump on that if you see it, Speqs should have it. A few other decent rye's can be had back east (where rye was more traditional. Pennsylvannian "Old Monongahela" is what George Washington and Andy Jackson drank. Rev. Elijah Craig hadn't invented the charred-barrel aging process and real bourbon yet. God bless him).

Eh, if you are talkin' the Kurt Cobain road; it's never even crossed my mind....not even in my darkest moments. But I can see how grunge or NIN or The Cure or somethin' might not be good for someone vulnerable.

Well, considering my son is with the inlaws, so I won't have to get up and deal with him all night...and I only have to listen to and grade speeches tomorrow for my first 5 classes, I might actually have a few more than is customary for a week night.
